live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. a somber memorial service is underway this morning for the four oakland police officers shot and kill by a wanted paroleee five years ago today. thanks for joining us. long enforcement from around the bay area and beyond are gathered for an emotional tribute. they are honoring four fallen colleagues, all taken by one man on the deadly of the day in the department's history. katie marzullo is at the cathedral of christ the light in

oakland. traditional catholic mass marks the occasion underway right now inside the church. we were inside as uniformed forces stood at attention for the mass. >> our matters are heavy as we commemorate the 5 the anniversary of the tragic slaying of our four oakland police officers. it was give years ago that the police department lost the four officers. officers from multiple agencies are here today to commemorate this day. oakland's interim chief says officers risked their lives each day and today's memorial is a chance for people to pay their respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. it is important to realize that those who may have lost their lives are never forgotten and part of the family. it is important to remember them.

>> two were shot and killed by a wanted paroleee, a 26-year-old during a traffic stop. he barricaded himself in an apartment and opened fire on two other sergeants as they went in after. those two sergeants were members of the s.w.a.t. team. the paroleee was shot and killed by other officers. not since 1970 were four law enforcement officers in california all killed on the same day, march 21. that is a day that will always be remembered in oakland and throughout the bay area. friends and familiar of a soldier killed in afghanistan a year ago today are dedicating a new memorial in his honor this morning. a tree-planting ceremony is underway at hayward city hall for sergeant first-class james grissom who grew up in hayward and graduated from mount eden high school in 1999. he was killed days before he was supposed to come home.

richmond police hope the public can help find a car limped to the first murder of the year in the city. the victim was if her late 30's. her name is not released. police are look for a burgundy sedan. >> a 75-year-old driver fine after dramatic scene in berkeley. police say the man was trying to leave a parking lot at the berkeley marine when he drove over an embankment and right and the pay. the van was only partly submerged and he got out on his own. a sergeant said it is possible the gas peddle was stuff. the tow truck was brought in but officials didn't want to drag the van over the rocks and risk damaging the gas task. >> they are trying to figure the cause of a fire at a san jose bar. it broke out in a storage area in the back of the eldorado

club. workers noticed the fire as they closed up at 1:45 this morning and tried to put it out but were unsuccessful. crews knocked it down after arriving. >> south bay arson investigators are getting federal help in the search for the cause of a fire that damaged the san jose church. matt keller is on the scene at minnesota avenue. matt? >> the a.t.f. has been notified which is standard. as i step away from the camera you can see the santa clara county arson task force is now in control of the investigation. they are trying to figure what started the fire. >> the fire and brimstone was not coming from the pulpit but from the administration office at church of god with flames started before 5:30 this morning by the family of the senior pastor in their home next door. >> i saw a bunch of flames and

smoke rising. i woke up the family and i said, everyone get up, the church office is on fire. >> firefighters kept the flames to one room. the tree never had a chance to catch fire. the chapel was safe. was it divine intervention? the fire department? or possibly both? >> the best solution is to knock the fire down. as you can see, that is what we have done. >> volunteers tried to sal value what they could flames, smoke and water did a lot of democrat. they have insurance but money cannot replace the reports and history collected from a church several decades old. >> we have two pastors and a regular secretary, worship leader and finance bookkeeping all in this place and now i don't know what we will do. >> it is all gone? >> all gone. >> the arson task force is expected to be here on the scene for several more hours as for the church of god, i was told services will take place on

with less cloud cover in the east bay develop and mid-40's, around 50 for the bay shore and to the coast. jumping ahead next week, on tuesday, a warm front rolls through with rain possible and a cold front behind it and another chance of rain right now on wednesday in the north bay and we get a break thursday and friday and saturday is a poll bigger storm and that is over a week away we will keep an eye on it and it could hang around until sunday and you will have to give up a weekend for the much needed rain. at lake tahoe you can see a few clouds but the not a lot of snow at 26 percent or 25 percent of where we should be for this time of the year. we are running out of time. the average is 49 for a high and 23 for a low. we are in the mid-to-upper 50's for highs and money 20's for low. here is the seven-day forecast, notice one-or-two degrees warmer saturday, sunday and the heat or warmth is here on monday it pulls back to average if not cooler on thursday with the best chance of rain rolling in on
